We have not touched the stars, nor are we forgiven, which brings us back to the hero’s shoulders and the gentleness that comes not from the absence of violence, but despite the abundance of it.

- Born to a reconstructive cosmetic surgeon and a music therapist who met abroad while on assignment for the Peace Corps, Sawyer was raised in an environment that fostered the same spirit of giving and volunteerism. Holidays were spent gathering donations and distributing them with various groups before reconvening for the family's own activities. Sawyer was encouraged to pursue service learning opportunities throughout his school years and found tutoring and the Big Brothers Big Sisters program to be the most rewarding. Those early years really helped shape his career goals.

- He's known the core members of his social group since undergrad at Brown University, where he double majored in Sociology and Public Policy. He met his ex wife, Brooke, outside of a party when he stepped out to smoke. The two had a tumultuous relationship, complicated by a pregnancy scare with another woman while they were on a break, before marrying in the summer of 2011. Fitting their usual schedule of breaking up and making up, Brooke and Sawyer were divorced by mid-2013, citing Irreconcilable Differences. Soon after, he took a soul searching trip to Europe with his best friend and Theta Delta Chi big, Aaron Burke, before moving to Chicago, IL to live with him while he recovered from the blow.

- Despite being employed full time with Cook County doing social work as a Child Protective Specialist, Sawyer also teaches weekend classes with the Chicago Rowing Foundation and competes privately with the Lincoln Park Boat Club. He's been rowing competitively since high school and received a scholarship to Brown to compete as coxswain for their Heavyweight Crew despite being uncharacteristically tall for the position.

- He has a chocolate lab/pitbull mix named Riptide who he adopted from the animal shelter. Their life together was touch and go at first, as Rippy took some time to learn his manners, which resulted in the casualties of several expensive electronics and a fair amount of drywall, but now the two have settled into an active routine that gets them both outside and on the water frequently. Riptide usually gets shotgun for all of Sawyer's best adventures and has even mastered the art of perching in the skids when Sawyer takes the boat out on Lake Michigan.
